Undiscovered Detroit Artist Makes His Mark

James C. Harrison Retrospective at the Detroit Design Center

James C. Harrison Retrospective at the Detroit Design Center

Kicking-off a three-part celebration of the late artist James C. Harrison, Schmidt’s Antiques will exhibit a collection of works from the artist’s estate at The Detroit Design Center Gallery, March 18th – 20th.

Featuring assemblage and later works by Harrison, the exhibition – James C. Harrison: A Retrospective of Personal Artwork – is a fascinating glimpse into his personal and artistic world.

Born in 1925, Harrison attended Cass Tech and the Cranbrook Academy of Art before moving to New York City as a commercial artist. Harrison’s time in Detroit pre-dates the Cass Corridor Movement but his themes and use of materials speak to the development of Detroit artists in that creative, tumultuous time.

READ ALL ABOUT JAMES C. HARRISON IN THIS DETROIT NEWS ARTICLE!
Schmidt’s first exhibition in Detroit shows how artists like Harrison carry the influence of the city to the rest of the world and provides the opportunity to discover and collect a new facet of Detroit art history.

Exhibition Opening Friday, March 18th, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Exhibition Viewing Saturday, March 19th and Sunday, March 20th, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Other events in this series include a display at the Michigan Modernism Exposition April 9th and 10th and culminate with the 20th Century Michigan Artists Exhibition at Schmidt’s Antiques May 6th-15th featuring a lecture from acclaimed historian and New York Times art critic, Ken Johnson.

Willys Detroit Closes Filson Comes to Detroit

Goodbye Willys.

One thing you can count on in Detroit is change! Willys Detroit has been a Midtown favorite for the past year and half but despite doing well it’s doors will be closing come April for a new outdoors-ier tenant at 441 W. Canfield.

Filson the Seattle-based parent company of Shinola and Willys will be joining Shinola’s chic block of Canfield this spring offering quilted field vests and wool shirts perfect for long walks around Belle Isle.

Rumor has it there will be another Willys location opening in the future but don’t rely on another Detroit retail myth and go shop now before the doors close!
